A Hip Hop Summer in New York City
Shake the Ground, The Ultimate Dance Competition, is excited to partner with the Joffrey Ballet School to bring our dancers the Joffrey NY Hip Hop Summer Intensive — three weeks of street and commercial dance training in the heart of New York City, led by Artistic Directors Lissette Salgado-Lucas and David Lucas.

Program Overview & Sessions
In partnership with Shake the Ground, The Ultimate Dance Competition – the Joffrey NY Hip Hop Summer Intensive, led by Artistic Directors Lissette Lucas and David Lucas, offers an immersive training experience rooted in the energy, creativity, and culture of hip hop and commercial dance. Through a wide range of street and commercial styles, students build versatility, individuality, performance confidence, and professional readiness while training with sought-after instructors and choreographers in New York City.
A Jazz & Contemporary or Hip Hop audition is required for admission to this intensive. Students may audition in person or digitally. Students must be 10 years of age by June 21st, 2027 to audition and be accepted for this program. In order to be considered for scholarships for this program students must attend a Hip Hop audition.
Students do not need to attend a separate audition for every Summer Intensive they are interested in. By completing a Jazz & Contemporary or Hip Hop audition, dancers are automatically considered for all Summer Intensives within that audition style for which they meet the stated age requirements.
Students train in a full-day intensive environment designed to build technique, artistry, versatility, and professional training habits. A typical day begins with classes in the morning, followed by an approximately 30–45 minute lunch break, with short 5–15 minute breaks between classes. Training then continues through the late afternoon or early evening with additional classes, specialty training, and/or rehearsals.
The curriculum may include Breaking, Freestyle, House, Jazz/Funk, Locking, Pop’n, Whacking, Commercial Dance, Krumping, Improv, Battling, Heels, Mock Audition, Resume/Headshot Creation, Flashmob, Q&A with Faculty, and Filming Hip Hop. Please note that certain classes may be offered only to select levels based on age, placement, and experience. Registered students will receive an exact schedule the week before the intensive start date.
Registration is structured by week, giving students flexibility to build an intensive experience that fits their summer schedule. Students may register for any number of available weeks, and selected weeks do not need to be consecutive.
Students participate in a different performance opportunity at the end of each week. Week 1 culminates in a flash mob, Week 2 in a music video shoot, and Week 3 in a theater performance.
All students attending the intensive during a given week participate in that week’s performance opportunity.
Dancers are assigned to training groups based on their audition and age and may be additionally evaluated during the first day of classes.
Studio assignments are determined by program scheduling, group placement, and enrollment. Requests for a particular studio location cannot be accommodated.
For students registered for housing, residence hall assignments are made based on several factors, which may include age, gender, program selection, dates of attendance, and available space. Requests for specific dorm building assignments cannot be guaranteed.
